Hey, Hampton Roads Peeps. Have you checked out Movin 107.7 yet? Late last week, I stumbled across the
station during my morning commute, and, instantly, I found myself singing along and reminiscing Harrington Middle School dances (remember when what’s there names got in trouble for the way they were dancing? Imagine how tame that would be now) and Hampton Union jams (now if only they played go-go, too) .
This new station, as it describes itself, plays “the best in retro, hip hop, R&B, classic dance hits and more.”
I introduced it to one of my co-workers, and she’s been singing along on her drive to work, too. So, if you’re in the area, give it a listen.
Although this expression was taken from not the most honest place, the world genuinely does need more love. Love can be in the small things … such as, my extremely talented photographer friend Krista, who takes photos of hearts she finds in everything. Her photos remind me that there’s love out there; we just have to be open to it, love for it and embrace it.
(While this photo wasn’t taken by my friend and her heart photos aren’t really on her site, her photography is amazing. Be sure to check it out.)
“What if I just got a T-shirt and went home?” I thought to myself this afternoon as I made my way to the Lynnhaven Mall. “Really? Do I want to be alone in a crowd of people?”
But it’s what I wanted to do. And if I always waited for others to do what I want to do, I’d miss out on a lot.
So, I went.
And in six to eight weeks, if you look really hard, you might see me in the sea of orange shirts, waving and cheering for a Virginia Beach family I’ve never met but wish the best for.
Today, I took part in the Extreme March, one of the activities this week for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. It was an extreme event. It was great to see so many people out donating food to the Foodbank and raising money for a family none of us personally knows. With everything else that goes on in the world, it was great to see that many people are still innately good. Everyone was kind and patient, something I’m not used to seeing with large crowds.
I even met two other women that had come on their own, and we walked together.
Imagine these words:
Stop running in the halls
Before you slip and fall.
Think it ooo-ver!
Now, can you hear them sung to the Supreme’s Stop in the Name of Love? When we were in elementary school, my friend Penny penned that little song as teachers repeatedly tried to get us little kids to slow down. As kids, we always opted for speed and felt invincible. Nothing would happen to us; teachers were just mean, bitter adults. But in truth, they were only looking out for our well being and safety.
Growing up in this culture of instant gratification, so many of us think that the moment we have in our minds that we want something, we’re supposed to get it. Our pastor preached this morning on how we always seem ready to run and leap into things without proper preparation.
That’s been too true too often in my life. I admit, I want everything now: the awesome career, God-given mate, beautiful kids, success, enough money to stop worrying so much about money … And all of it will come in due time. I just have to remember to continue to put the work in and prepare for the good stuff that is to come. Just as I am preparing, God is also preparing the way for me. I just have to slow down.
